So far, 144 of the 354 local authorities have complied with the call made by the Local Government Secretary, Eric Pickles six months ago, to start publishing spending data for all transactions over £500. There is no legal obligation to do so but 'serious questions' will be asked if councils do not open their books by the target date of January 31st.
