Aren't you lucky ! You live in a National Park !

In two weeks time  ( March 31st ) we will officially be living within the South Downs National Park.  But what does it actually mean ? DEFRA ( Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs ) defines it as an area with special qualities in terms of natural beauty  and opportunities for open-air recreation. This means that, among other definitions, the area will have ' the highest landscape protection under the planning system '. Presumably then, efforts to rip out tracts of established trees and shrubs and erect miles of deer-proof fencing to re-instate a railway line should be fairly difficult ? For more detail, see :- http://www.defra.gov.uk/rural/national-parks/south-downs/south-downs.htm

  1. I wish you were right, but unfortunately I read somewhere that if proposals have been made for a piece of land prior to an area getting National Park status, that does not necessarily mean that the proposal will become obsolete.

  2. Cheer up Grump2, the railway is only at the feasibility stage as yet and a pipe-dream of a few over-excited Councillors. Since publishing this Post we have had an email from the Head of Planning at the SouthDowns National Park Authority saying that 'the development would certainly be for the NPA to determine'

  3. That's encouraging, thankyou. I'll try not to be so grumpy.
